The Turk’s Head in St Margarets is building on last year’s successful evening with Hugh Brasher, event director of the TCS London Marathon, with another first-class speaker from the running fraternity. This year, the pub will play host to Paul Sinton-Hewitt CBE – founder of parkrun, the hugely popular free weekly running events that take place right across the globe. The event takes place on Wednesday 13 September and includes a buffet supper. Tickets are available online and cost just £12.
With nearly 1200 events taking place every week in the UK alone, parkrun has been a phenomenal success. Paul was born in Zimbabwe, grew up in South Africa, and is a big believer in the power of sport and exercise in personal wellbeing. He started the Bushy Park Timetrial in 2004 and that was the spark that ignited the parkrun phenomenon. By 2018, over a quarter of a million people were taking part globally each week.
Ollie Coulombeau, General Manager at The Turk’s Head, said: “Running is very much part of The Turk’s Head psyche, thanks to our relationship with The Bearcat Running Club, which has been ongoing for over a decade now. Last year’s event was a great success and I know Paul is going to be an equally popular guest speaker.
“There are a lot of similarities between pubs and parkrun. It’s about bringing people together to do something they enjoy, building friendships and being there to support one other – parkrun and pubs are both at the hearts of their communities and I can’t wait to hear Paul’s amazing story.”
The event starts at 6pm with drinks in the garden, followed by Paul’s talk and Q&A, and a light buffet supper.
